Oriental Fountain Grass or Designer’s Dream!
Pennisetum orientale is native to Central Asia (Pakistan, North-West India), likes warm, sunny conditions and has a long flowering period (unlike P. alopecuroides) from early summer until the first frosts.
Pennisetum orientale 'Tall Tails’ was introduced into the catalogue in 1988 by North American Plant Delights Nursery; it has a tall, tentacular flowering of curvy, silky cylindrical spikes (25 cm to 30 cm in height), which are a mother of pearl pink to ivory white.
Pennisetum orientale 'Tall Tails' is a spectacular grass that can grow up to 1.2 m to 1.8 m in height. You can use its verticality, as part of a landscape design, to plant as an isolated specimen in a mixed border or en masse in a tall border with a planting distance: of 1.20 m to 1.5 m.
Preferably grow in full sun in ordinary, light and well-drained soil. A light pruning followed by watering can prompt another flowering in the heart of summer and thus prolong its decorative appeal.
Hardiness: Avoid heavy, clay soils which are wet in winter.
