Penstemon heterophyllus 'Blue Spring' provides us with a long summer flowering of azure blue flower spikes. We like to plant it in a sunny rockery in well-drained, mainly sandy soil. Resists summer drought.
The Penstemon genus is native to Central and North America. It has some 250 species and is very diverse, ranging from herbaceous perennials to woody-stemmed subshrubs and lives in a wide variety of habitats.
The species from alpine or subalpine regions are the most useful for ornamental gardens. They are fairly hardy and acclimatise without too much difficulty in a rock garden and will produce delightful, sparkling and colourful flowers over a long flowering period.
The plant we are presenting was discovered by the famous British explorer David Douglas (1799-1834) in the dry hills of California and was introduced in 1834.
Penstemon heterophyllus is a subshrub about forty centimetres high, with pretty evergreen foliage of light green lanceolate leaves and offers us joyful flowering of blue tubular flowers over several weeks, in late spring or early summer (depending on the region).
The Penstemon heterophyllus 'Blue Spring' variety has azure blue flowers.
For a rock garden, large planters, troughs, raised borders or gravel gardens.
Try planting en masse for a flowering period of four to six weeks.
Penstemon heterophyllus needs good, light, but substantial soil, which is sandy rather than chalky, if it is to prosper and charm the plant lovers!
But be careful: winter damp is its foe! Planted in the sun in a well-drained situation this Penstemon can withstand temperatures as low as -12°C.
- prune to shape at the end of winter. The flowers that appear on the stems of the year have a better colouring,
- prune the dried inflorescences to encourage the growth of new flowers,
- propagation by cuttings grown in sand in August-September.
