Native to North America, from Mexico to Canada, Allium cernuum is commonly found in dry woodlands, and on grassy slopes and rocky escarpments.
Allium cernuum 'White Master’ is both an unusual form of wild onion and a little gem!
- It is taller than the species, growing to 30 and sometimes 40 centimetres in height. This ornamental onion grows in an elegant clump with a display over several months, as the leaves last after the flowers have finished.
- Its characteristic nodding flowering is made up of delicate white blooms arranged in hanging umbels. Flowers appear from June onwards and can often last until July.
Like the species, Allium cernuum 'White Master' is edible, but is mainly used to decorate the edges of paths or borders in a rock garden.
Grow in light, well-drained garden soil in the sun or slight shade. In climates with hot summers (continental or Mediterranean), this variety prefers a spot in partial shade (in the afternoons).
Try experimenting by planting it en masse together with Gypsophila repens 'Dorothy Teacher'. Long live the marriage of pink and white!
