Prairie Skullcap. Summer flowering in dry, poor soil.
The Scutellaria genus belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family and includes some 300 species distributed across temperate regions in the northern hemisphere. Most are summer-flowering herbaceous perennials and are very easy to grow.
The root of the name scutella comes from the Latin meaning 'little shield' and refers to the shape of the flower whose calyx is rather like a little cup or plate.
The Scutellaria resinosa species is native to the southern United States (Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas) and found in low-lying prairies with rocky or sandy soils.
The variety we offer was discovered in the Smoky Hills region (Kansas, USA). Scutellaria resinosa 'Smoky Hills' grows into a charming, woody-based clump(*) about 20 centimetres high and produces an intense summer flowering of violet-blue blooms.
We grow it in a bed in a rock garden with a gravel mulch and together with low-growing grasses (Festuca) or Sedum, Sempervivum. It also grows beautifully in a pot in an alpine greenhouse.
It doesn't take much to keep Scutellaria resinosa 'Smoky Hills' happy; just some sunshine and light to sandy soil, which is slightly acid to chalky. Occasional summer watering will keep it flowering.
Maintenance: Deadhead to prolong flowering. May re-seed.
(*) woody-based perennials do not like too much damp in winter and prefer growing in rocky soils. You can grow prairie skullcap in pots in an alpine greenhouse in a mix of: 1/4 garden soil, 1/4 horticultural mix or leaf compost and 1/2 rough sand (2-5 mm). Add some crushed shells, lithothamnium and chalk dust).
