A pure beauty worth contemplating.
Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' is a Japanese selection, a cross between Tricyrtis hirta X Tricyrtis formosana which was initially bred for the cut flower market. It has escaped into the garden where gardeners can enjoy it fully without having to bend over. Its beautiful flowers are similar to those of orchids.
Also known as toad lily, Tricyrtis grows into an upright, unbending tuft with abundant flowering. Its starry white flowers are speckled with violet, turning burgundy-red as they fade. Flowering lasts from early September until late October. Height: 70 cm.
If you plant Tricyrtis 'Sinonome’ in optimal growing conditions, in soft, moist, humus-rich soil with a shady exposure, the short rhizomes of this perennial will spread to form small colonies.
As its foliage is not particularly interesting, we like to create contrast by combining it with big-leaved varieties such as Hosta, Astiboides, Rodgersia, Petasites, Aster divaricatus, Ligularia, or ferns.
For a shady border, understory garden or Japanese garden; it is also a good cut flower.
Grow in light shade in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil, which is slightly acid to neutral. In cold regions or mountainous zones, you can plant Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' in a warm, sheltered spot, but not in the sun and its flowering will appear before the first frosts in autumn. Avoid alkaline soils.
At the beginning of winter, cut the plant back and apply a mulch of rough compost. This provides good protection and amendment.
Tip: You can cut Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' back to half its volume in June. Planted in a border, it will then grow into a dense clump with uniform flowering.
Native to East Asia (*) the Tricyrtis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family and includes sixteen species. They grow in damp forests and on cliffs and prefer in partial shade situation. They are great favourites with gardeners for their spectacular, orchid-like flowers and their late flowering period.
(*) From Japan and the islands of Taiwan (formerly Formosa) to the east central Himalayas.
