A mini phormium for shady beds
Astelia nivicola 'Red Devil' is an herbaceous perennial native to New Zealand (South Island) and belongs to the lily family. It looks rather like a mini phormium with dark red, lance-like leaves highlighted in silver.
It grows to a maximum height of 40 - 50 cm and is useful in a shady border to enhance and contrast with round-leaved varieties such as the heucheras or the pink flowering Epimedium leptorrhizum, Primula 'Quaker Bonnet', Convallaria majalis 'Rosea' or Astrantia 'Roma'.
As it keeps its leaves in winter, it can be very effective all year round in a pot with Heuchera 'Sugar Plum' + Astelia nivicola 'Red Devil' + Primula 'Quaker Bonnet'.
In a temperate, maritime climate grow in light, humus-rich soil, which is well drained in winter (enriched with ericaceous or good horticultural compost). Grow in a shaded spot or with morning sun.
Maintenance: trim damaged leaves at the end of the winter.
