Melittis ‘Royal Velvet Distinction’

Availability : Available

Description :

Melittis melissophyllum (Lamiaceae) or bastard balm is common in the light, deciduous woodlands of Western Europe.

This nectar-producing plant with aromatic foliage is much loved by the butterflies and bees (from melissa, the Greek for bee).

Melittis melissophyllum 'Royal Velvet Distinction' is a variety that was selected by Dutch nursery woman Eleonore de Koning.

This variety was produced from a seedling and, compared with the species type, has darker foliage and violet rather than purple-blue colouring on the lower lip of the flower.

In the garden we like to plant it under trees where it will develop a bushy habit (30-50 cm in height), It produces delicate flowers from May until the end of July.

Melittis melissophyllum 'Royal Velvet Distinction' is easy to grow and simply appreciates humus-rich, light, well-drained soil.

Remarkable flowers that we combine with the generous foliage or the hostas or the colourful heucheras (Heuchera 'Frosted Violet')

Enjoy ;-)
