Helleborus orientalis 'Double Pink Spotted' produces incredible double, pink-white blooms with purple splashes from the end of winter.
Height: 40 cm. Flowering: January to March.
Native to the north-east of Greece, northern Turkey and the Caucasus, the Helleborus orientalis species has several ornamental qualities:
- clumps of thick, tough, evergreen leaves,
- early flowering from mid-winter to early spring,
- as tough and hardy as they come!
We like to plant Helleborus orientalis with partial shade varieties from the spring flowering perennials group (Primula, Pulmonaria, Anemone nemorosa, Brunnera...), with foliage plants (Ophiopogon, Acorus, Carex) and spring bulbs (Galanthus, Ipheions, Muscari, Narcissus, etc. )
This Helleborus or Lenten Rose likes a moist situation, in partial shade under cover of trees or shrubs and good, heavyish, slightly acid to neutral garden soil. Removing dead foliage before flowering will enhance the floral bouquet.
Maintenance: mulch with leaf mould after flowering
