A tropical air
Japanese Aralia is a small shrub native to Japan's high woodlands. It has a graceful habit and generous evergreen foliage of shiny, palmately-lobed leaves.
Its exotic air is rather deceptive as this little shrub is hardy with little leaf impairment (defoliation) from zone 8 to zone 10. (Further information: Hardiness zones)
Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' can therefore be grown anywhere, including regions where winter temperatures can drop to -12°C /-15°C. Shelter from cold winters (patio, courtyard, against a wall or in a protected spot in a shady garden).
The cultivar we have on offer is from Japan. Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' is a marvellous, variegated variety, which changes with the seasons and as the plant ages; from completely creamy-white to lustrous, white-splashed, dark green, palmate leaves.
We use it in a partial shade garden as an architectural plant for its remarkable foliage. Grows very well in a container on a shady terrace or in an internal courtyard.
Grow in partial shade in ordinary soil, that is sufficiently moist in summer and well-drained in winter. Apply leaf compost in spring.
* in continental or alpine areas (zones 6-7) Fatsia japonica 'Spider 's Web' is a fine indoors house plant that can grow to more than 2 metres in height.
