An unusual false nettle!
The Boehmeria genus belongs to the Urticaceae family and is native to south-east Asia. It includes about one hundred species of shrubs and perennials. None of them have stinging hairs.
Boehmeria sieboldiana is native to the high altitude woodlands of Japan and Korea and is an herbaceous perennial with an elegant, slender habit.
We particularly appreciate the superb texture of its foliage: shiny dark green, serrated and ribbed lanceolate leaves.
In the garden we like to plant it at the back of a shady border or in a moist woodland setting.
Accompanying plants: Polygonatum, tall ferns.
Grow in partial shade in moist, humus-rich soil. Avoid drying winds and sunny exposure.
