Very attractive in winter.
Vigorous growth and tall flowers well above the generous foliage. Is that all?
Well, no! Epimedium x 'Black Sea' puts on its sublime black-purple overcoat in winter. The winter colouring of the foliage lasts through until the spring and provides a strong contrast with its tall bouquets of pastel-yellow, orange-veined flowers.
Height of the foliage: 20 to 25 cm. Height of the flowers: 35 to 40 cm.
In the garden we like to plant it as edging in a border where it is attractive in winter combined with golden-leaved varieties of Acorus or Heuchera. It also works well as a good, little ground cover for partial shade or even dry locations.
Grow in light shade in humus-rich, well-drained (in winter) garden soil.
How to prune?
Here's how! Unlike the other Epimedium, it’s best to prune the previous year's foliage after flowering. Prune carefully stem by stem, if you don't mind! Mr Black Sea likes a bit of TLC! (*)
