A striking spring contrast of purple bronze foliage crowned with light yellow flowers.
British nurseryman, Robin White of Blackthorn Nursery (Hampshire, UK) has bred some beautiful varieties of Epimedium, including the delicate Epimedium 'Pink Elf' and the vigorous Epimedium 'Amber Queen'. To these, we can now add the charming Epimedium 'Flower of Sulfur'.
From March onwards, this Epimedium produces attractive floral stems with sulphur yellow bell flowers. Their white sepals and spurs appear well above the foliage which starts out purple bronze and turns green by the end of spring. Height: 15 to 25 cm.
In the garden we like to use Epimedium 'Flower of Sulfur', as a small ground cover for the edge of a shady border, planted for striking colour matches with garden primroses, such as Primula vulgaris or Primula veris (*), or cream foliage varieties such as Carex 'Lemon Zest' or Brunnera macrophylla 'Diane's Gold'. Spring flowering bulbs (Anemone nemorosa 'Blue Eyes') are also a good choice to liven up a carpet of Epidemium.
Grow in light shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Good resistance to temporary drought. Avoid heavy, damp soils.
Although evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on the variety, we prefer to cut back the leaves of Epimedium at the end of the winter to show off the delicate new growth of foliage and the beautiful flowering.
