An avalanche of coral flowers on spike

Mountain fleece flower is a genus that has suffered from a bad reputation, been forgotten and often mis-named. So we should applaud Belgian gardener Chris Ghyselen for his bold and laudable initiative to breed a new selection of Persicaria.

Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Orange Field' produces an avalanche of flowers on coral or orange-pink spikes in June-July. Prune back after flowering and it's off again for a second floral marathon until the first frosts.

In the garden its lance-like flowers can provide interesting vertical contrast with the rounded habit of Rudbeckias, Echinacea or Helenium and its dense sturdiness can counterbalance the upright, wavy habit of grasses (Miscanthus, Panicum).

Grow in partial shade or sun (not scorching) in good garden soil. This is a robust plant, but can go into summer dormancy of there is a temporary drought.

Maintenance: give it a radical prune at the end of winter and mulch. Water if necessary
