Chris Ghyselen, the renowned Belgian nurseryman who has a passion for Periscaria, is the breeder responsible for Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Blackfield'.
Thanks to his selection work, we are now under the spell of this new Persicaria, which has a tidy, dense habit, a long flowering period with beautiful dark red to purple spikes, soft green spearhead foliage which turns golden in autumn and keeps its appearance in winter.
Given its height of 70 cm, it is a natural mid-border companion for grasses and late summer flowering varieties, such as Sedum x matrona, Helenium, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen', Eupatorium, Pennisetum, Panicum, Miscanthus , Aster, Chrysanthemum, etc.
In a border, we like to plant around its base varieties such as Heuchera, Hosta, Brunnera, Geranium, Coreopis verticillata 'Moonbeam'.
Periscaria are tough, long-lasting plants. They will give their best in good garden soil, but can also cope with heavy clay soil or ordinary soil and survive temporary drought. A plant for every garden.
