One of the most popular perennials in the world, Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus Superior' celebrated its 25th birthday in 2010.
The Jelitto seed nursery introduced it into the catalogue in 1985 in honour of its breeder, Magnus B. Nilsson, who gave it to Klaus R. Jelitto after ten long years of selection. In 1998 it was awarded the Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year and in 2003 the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
As is often the case, standards can be improved, so to celebrate Magnus's birthday, Jelitto has introduced 'Magnus Superior'.
Darker stems and flowers, a larger central cone and more vigorous growth. These are the main improvements.
In the garden we like to grow it with Perovskia, Pennisetum 'Karley Rose', Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten', Panicum virgatum 'Schenandoah', asters, and the larger sedums such as Sedum 'Matrona' or Sedum 'Purple Emperor'.
Flowers from July to September. Wide blooms with carmine red horizontal petals and an orangey-red central cone.
Grow in the sun or partial shade in good garden soil.
