Artemisia arborescens

Availability : Available

Description :

Probably the most beautiful silver foliage plant.

Artemisia arborescens is a small upright shrub with a gracious habit and it native to the Mediterranean basin. It has deeply divided aromatic leaves with a particularly silky, luminous aspect.

In the rock garden, it can be beautiful planted on its own or as a companion to taller perennials for poor, dry soil (Verbena bonariensis, Verbascum, Sedum 'Matrona').

In moist, fertile soil in a temperate climate, we like to combine it with the violet blues of bellflowers, delphiniums, perennial geraniums and roses.

For a temperate garden, seaside garden, gravel garden.

Although Artemisia 'Powis Castle' is well known to gardeners, curiously the Artemisia arborescens species is much less well known. Yet it has undeniable ornamental qualities: dense, vigorous growth, an upright habit, easy to prune and it adapts well to most growing conditions.

Grow in the sun or slight shade in ordinary, light soil that is well drained in winter. Resistant to temporary drought. Hardiness: 8°C

Maintenance: prune the young shoots from May onwards. In regions with harsh winters plant against a south-facing wall.

PS: the aromatic leaves can be used as a tisane or herbal tea.
