Rock hyssop, dwarf hyssop
Native to the Pyrenees, Hyssopus officinalis ssp aristatus (Rock hyssop, dwarf hyssop) forms a dense, compact bush, much lower than the common Mediterranean hyssop.
Aromatic, perennial and melliferous, its violet-blue flowers are borne in short spikes and used in the preparation of herbal teas and condiments to accompany meat and stews.
In the garden, they attract a host of insects: butterflies, bees, etc.
Grow Hyssopus officinalis ssp aristatus together with thyme, lavender, sedum. It is a sturdy pant which grows in full sun (scorching) in ordinary (poor and dry) and free draining (gravelly) soil.
Landscaping advice: Hyssopus officinalis ssp aristatus forms a perfect ball which is long-lived and has attractive violet-blue flowers. We like to associate it with upright plants (Sedum fabarium, Allium sphaerocephalon, etc.)
