Description :

A theatrical thistle!

Over the years the cardoon Cynara cardunculusforms an admirably sculptural clump. Up to 150 cm in height.

This star plant can be featured on its own or in a bed, associated with steel-blue flowering varieties such as Perovskia, Echinops, Phlox paniculata or pink Echinaceas, Diascias or indeed the large Sedum spectabile.

And for more daring gardeners, we suggest a Wagnerian setting:

Cynara cardunculus above waves of Stipa tenuifolia, Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'  or Festuca gautieri 'Pic Carlit'

Silvery-grey, deeply-indented foliage.

Useful to create a focus point or to highlight a perspective.

Grow in rich, well-drained soil. Protect from high winds and, in cold regions, apply winter mulch. To bring out the decorative quality of the foliage prune the inflorescences.
