Description :

Tall spikes bearing orange star-shaped flowers.

Bulbine frutescens is a species native to arid regions in the Cape Province (South Africa). This succulent belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and has been known since the 18th century as an ornamental and medicinal plant, with properties similar to Aloe vera (*).

The Bulbine frutescens 'Hallmark' cultivar has luminous summer flowering that lasts until the first winter frosts: tall spikes bearing orange star-shaped flowers.

In a temperate garden, you can use it as a fast-growing ground cover to form a large colony in a dry rockery or as a fabulous companion to blue-flowering varieties such as agapanthus and lavender, or the silver-leaved Helichrysum, Artemisia and Santolina, or the dark purple Aeonium.

For rockeries, gravel gardens, banks and seaside gardens.

You can grow it in pots in non-temperate regions and then overwinter in a cold frame, veranda or orangery. Reduce watering considerably from the end of autumn until the new growth appears the following April-May.
