Scabiosa 'Vivid Violet'

Description :

Long summer flowering period

Scabiosa 'Vivid Violet' was introduced in 2008 by the American Terra Nova Nurseries. It adds a touch of brightness to that rather small and pale world of the hardy perennial scabious varieties, given the intensity of its violet pink colouring.

It grows into a low tuft with deeply-indented grey-green leaves and has an incredibly long summer flowering (*) period with violet pink pompom, pincushion blooms.

Scabiosa 'Vivid Violet' likes full sun and light soil, well-drained in winter, so we plant it in a rockery or a sunny border, together with:

1 - Salvia nemorosa

Their tall flower spikes in hues of pink and violet contrast with the round, pincushion scabious flowers.

2 - Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam'

The lightness of its multitude of fresh, buttery-yellow flowers makes for an extra contrast with the heavier, well-defined habits of the salvias and scabious and

... many other varieties: Salvia officinalis 'Tricolor', Stackys 'Primrose Heron', Echinacea purpurea 'Rubinstern', Anthemis 'E.C. Buxton', Echinacea 'Secret Romance', Sedum spectabile 'Brillant', Helictotrichon sempervirens, Agropyron magellanicum.

Grow in the sun in ordinary, slightly acidic to alkaline soil, and which is well-drained in winter.

Planted in the ground, this plant does not need watering, but it's better to avoid growing it in pots as it would need a regular drip feed! It is very sensitive to water stress and its root system needs to develop freely. And it will dry out very quickly when grown in a pot.

Maintenance: divide the clumps after the third growing year. Deadhead to prolong flowering.
