Thyme is used mainly as a culinary herb, but can also be found in gardens, planted in between paving stones or to edge a border. It is a pity that thyme selections are not more widely used instead of a grass lawn, as they provide great ground cover.
Low maintenance and easy to grow, even in dry, poor soil, they form a year round mat which is lit up at the end of spring by an incredible profusion of flowers. Trim with shears at the end of flowering to tidy and refresh.
Thymus praecox 'Red Carpet' forms a dense mat and a profusion of intense pink flowers. Grow in the sun in ordinary, gravelly soil, neutral to alkaline.
