1993 Perennial Plant of the Year
Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue' was introduced in 1946 into the ornamental plants’ catalogue by Robert Bennerup, founder of Sunny Border Nursery (Connecticut, USA); it forms a compact tuft of dark green leaves and has a long flowering period over several weeks from summer through to autumn, producing dense blue-purple floral spikes. Height of the floral spikes: 35 to -50 cm.
In the garden we like to combine this speedwell in a mixed border with white-flowering perennials (Echinacea 'Happy Star', Echinacea 'White Swan'), cream (Coreopsis verticiliata 'Moonbeam') or yellow (Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro') varieties.
Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue' tolerates a several different soil types as long as they are well drained. Preferably grow in full sun for optimal flowering.
Maintenance: regularly prune the dried floral spikes to prolong the flowering period.
The Perennial Plant Association was established in 1984 and is an American industry association for nurseries, horticulturists, landscape designers and teachers working in the herbaceous plant sector.
Its aim is to bring together professionals, develop educational programmes and promote perennial plants.
The 'Perennial Plant of the Year'® programme was set up in 1990 to select a perennial for the year from thousands of competing plants.
Similar to the Award of Garden Merit organized by the British Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the 'Perennial Plant of the Year’ chooses plants suitable for a wide range of climatic conditions, which require little care, are fairly resistant to parasites and disease, and have an obvious ornamental quality. The Perennial Plant of The Year never promotes horticultural novelties, as the chosen plant must have been tried and tested in gardens over several years.
