Vibrant red flowers
Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal’ has very dark foliage, tinged with bronze in the spring then turning a dark green in the summer, and panicles of red flowers. Height of the foliage: 25 cm. Height of the plumes: 40 cm.
You can plant Astilbe x arendsii 'Fanal' on its own along the edge of a mixed-border, combined with golden foliage varieties such as Hosta, Acanthus mollis 'Hollard 's Gold', Aralia cordata 'Sun King', Rodgersia podophylla 'Rotlaub', Acorus 'Ogon', Leucosceptrum japonicum 'Golden Angel', Carex elata ‘Aurea’, or en masse to form a large colony in a peaty soil.
Easy to grow in the sun (not scorching) or light shade in good garden soil that can be clayey, heavy and damp. A good cut flower and the dried floral spikes remain attractive in the winter.
- keep constantly moist from the middle of spring;
- apply mature compost in spring;
- divide the clumps every three years;
The wide-ranging group of hybrid Astilbe was developed by German nurseryman Georg Arends (1862-1952), who was a prolific plant breeder. These hybrids are crosses between A. chinensis, A. japonica, A. thumbergii and A. astilboides. They are perennials which form gracious fern-like clumps and remarkable flowering spikes that rise above the foliage.
