Giant Hog Fennel or Milk Parsley
This majestic plant is native to light forests and damp, grassy hills in Europe. During the spring Peucedanum verticillare elegantly deploys its wide, deeply-divided leaves borne on pinkish purple stems and then produces a mid-summer flourish of 2 metre tall broad umbels of white flowers.
In the garden we can put its theatricality to good effect at the back of a mixed border, together with Eupatorium, Veronicastrum virginianum 'Album', or Vernonia crinita.
An ephemeral biennial perennial that will naturally reseed itself. Grow in the sun (not too hot) or partial shade in good, well-drained, moist, humus-rich soil, amended in the spring with mature leaf compost.
