Description :

Native to the north-east of the United States(*), Aster novi-belgii has remarkable flowers with a range of extraordinary colours from light pink to the deepest purple.

Unfortunately the species suffers from powdery mildew(**) and is therefore rather unloved by gardeners.

So we have two solutions! Either apply a preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture (copper sulphate and slaked lime) used as a fungicide or just put up with it!

Aster novi-belgii 'Marie Ballard' flowers in the autumn (September-October). Double lavender-blue flowers. A good cut flower.

We like to combine it with other autumn-flowering perennials and why not with other violet-blue flowering asters in a monochromatic bed!

Grow in good, fertile, moist, humus-rich and well-drained garden soil.

(*) New Belgium or New Netherland is located between Virginia and New England and includes part of what is now the State of New York.

(**) Impairment of the foliage marked by the appearance of a white powder.
