Double Japanese Aster
Native to South-East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), the Kalimeris genus, is a member of the Asteraceae family and never ceases to surprise!
We like it for all its great qualities: easy to grow, in the sun to partial shade, from heavy, damp soil to the gravel garden, absolutely disease-free and long summer flowering.
In short, the Kalimeris genus is perfect for beginner gardeners.
Kalimeris pinnatifida 'Hortensis' has the added bonus of soft, double, creamy white flowers, highlighted by yellow stamens. The subtle, delicate flowers are borne on stems rising up form a light tuft of deeply indented foliage.
Rarely available from nurseries, Japanese Aster likes to play hide and seek with plant lovers. It has several different names: Kalimeris mongolica, Asteromoea mongolica, Kalimeris mongolica 'Hortensis' and Double Japanese Aster!
In the garden we like to plant Kalimeris pinnatifida 'Hortensis' with the delicate foliage of the grasses (Pennisetum, Festuca mairei, Sporobolus, Stipa tenuifolia), summer flowering plants (Echinacea, Agastache, Aster) or as a star plant in the middle of a setting of silvery foliage (Artemisia 'Powis Castle', Stackys, Senecio).
