The Agapanthus genus belongs to the Lily family. It is originally from South Africa and includes twenty species. The evergreen species live by the sea and the deciduous ones in mountain meadows. These perennials with fleshy roots and short rhizomes are valued for their beautiful foliage and summer flowering umbels.
Agapanthus 'Queen Mum' is a luxury specimen with her wide dark green lanceolate leaves and sturdy flower stems about 120 cm tall. Her generous and exceptional umbels bear tubular flowers which are mauve violet at the base and pure white at the tip. Really sublime!
It is not widely known that, because this plant only produces a few seeds, it conserves its precious energy for growth and flowering.
And perhaps the breeder was having a little joke when he named the flower. He must have been thinking of one the Queen Mum's hats!
The African lily, as its name implies, likes full sun and some moisture during flowering, but hates waterlogged soil during dormancy. The Queen Mum agapanthus is very vigorous and likes uncluttered situations. She may, however, deign to accept the company of the silver leaved wormwood (Artemisia 'Powis Castle') or the violet blue bellflower (Campanula 'Sarastro'). In winter, take care to protect her powerful roots with a 25 cm thick bracken mulch
According to an old tale agapanthus flowers abundantly when she hasn't been repotted. She likes to be fitted, but not strangled!
Agapanthus also works well in flower arrangements. It's a matter of choice whether you like a single stem or a large bunch for a composition. The dried flower stems are also decorative.
