Queen of the American prairies.
This meadowsweet is native to the American prairies, from Pennsylvania to Georgia and from Iowa to Missouri. Filipendula rubra 'Venusta' is easy to grow and has attractive fern-like foliage and beautiful purple-pink sprays of free flowering blooms.
In the garden, we like to plant it behind Persicaria affinis or Sanguisorba, mixed with Echinacea, Monarda, Echinops, Achillea, Phlox paniculata, Chelone obliqua, or in front of Miscanthus, Verbena bonariensis, Inula and Thalictrum.
Grow in the sun or slight shade in ordinary soil, which is sufficiently moist in summer.
Can grow in heavy, damp, clay soils.
Height: 120 to 160 cm.
To sum up, a big, beautiful plant for a generous bed. (Filipendula rubra 'Venusta' in situ: click on the photo !)
