Originally from the moist mountain meadows of the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China, Primula vialii produces astonishing spike inflorescences 10 - 15 cm long.
It enjoys partial shade and humus-rich, slightly acid, moist to damp soils.
It will grow in the sun in moist soil. Summer flowering in July-August. Height: 30 to 50 cm. Deciduous leaves in winter. Very hardy.
Primula vialii, also known as orchid primrose, red-hot poker primrose, or Chinese pagoda primrose has great gardening potential. Its striking flowers are particularly stunning when planted in a prominent position, either on their own or preferably in groups of 3, 5 or 7 plants. Plant with bugles or Ajuga to contrast with their purple foliage.
