Geranium wallichianum is a species native to the Himalayas (north-east Afghanistan and northern India). This hardy herbaceous perennial with a taproot grows in wide, low clumps (but does not sucker) and has a long summer flowering period with wide pink, purple or lilac blooms.
Many hybrids have been bred from the species, of which it’s worth noting the following varieties: Geranium ' Buxton's Variety', Geranium 'Rozanne', Geranium 'Sweet Heidy', Geranium 'Pink Penny', Geranium 'Sylvia's Surprise', Geranium 'Jolly Bee', Geranium 'Azure Rush', Geranium 'Blue Sunrise' and Geranium 'Rise and Shine'.
‘Rise and Shine’ was selected by Dutch breeder, Marco van Noort and first became available on the horticultural market in 2011.
Marco van Noort gives us his take on Geranium 'Rise and Shine':
« Geranium 'Rise and Shine' came from my Geranium 'J. Bee’ and is a later flowering variety, from mid-summer until mid-October. With the summer heat, its colours become more intense: blue, violet and lilac. It's rather greedy, so it's a good idea to add some full organic fertilizer when planting to support flowering.
A very nice Geranium to fill up empty spots in the garden! »
It is compact (and takes a while to get established); find it a place at the edge of a sunny border and plant it with silvery foliage varieties or the free-flowering Nemesia denticulata.

Grow in the sun (not scorching) or light shade in good garden soil. Grows well in troughs or pots. Slightly drooping effect.
