Description :

Shamrock Pea or Blue Oxalis

Parochetus communis is a semi-hardy perennial native to Central Africa (Kenya at about 3000 m in altitude) and Asia (India, Himalayas, south-west China). Its habitat is in damp, shady areas in meadows, ditches, banks and riversides.

It is an astonishingly good ground cover and can rapidly grow into extensive colonies. Its flowering is of single blooms borne on 10 cm peduncles, which appear in the summer and continue through to late autumn or even winter in a cold frame.

The leaves are like clover leaves, the flowers like pea flowers, but of an incomparable cobalt blue!

Parochetus communis is not very hardy (-5°C), so we only plant it out under shrubs or by a wall in temperate, maritime or Mediterranean climates.

In other regions, this very pretty plant grows well in pots or hanging baskets. This makes it easy to overwinter the plants in a cold frame, veranda or bring them indoors until the warm weather returns.

Grow in light, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil.
