Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra 'Nicolas' is a cultivar from French nursery L'Atelier Vert. Its unique foliage is yellow green in spring and it turns red as the temperatures get warmer in summer. Come September, its gracious tufts take on warm autumnal hues.
Hakonechloa macra is a superb grass for moist, shady areas. Its arching habit can be very effective if you plant it in a raised position, for instance on a wall or rockery.
In a tubby, round pot it's not bad either! (Jonquil Vase, Papyrus Vase from the Ravel Potteries)
A favourite plant combination:
« We like to plant Hakonechloa macra 'Nicolas' under shrubs with interesting bark (Betulus, Cornus, Prunus) together with Heucherella 'Golden Zebra' whose unusual leaves are warmly coloured in the autumn. »
Grow in partial shade (morning sun) in good, humus-rich, moist and well-drained garden soil.
Note: Hakonechloa macra 'Nicolas' is slow to get established, more colourful and therefore, less vigorous than the Hakonechloa 'Beni-Kase' variety.
