Carex flagellifera is a species native to New Zealand where it thrives in damp and shady habitats. It is close to C. comans and C testacea, but differs, however, in that its long floral stems can grow to two metres (!) and it forms a large clump with a cascading habit.
As its name suggests, Carex flagellifera 'Kiwi' is an olive-green version with a zest of orange from the type species, which has foliage that starts off bronze.
This sedge is a fast grower so a good choice for growing in pots or in a semi-shady rockery, on rockfill, the side of a garden staircase, on a bank or by water.
Grow in the sun or partial shade in ordinary soil that is not too dry.
