This broad-leaved sedge is a lovely little ground cover
Native to the woodlands and mountains of Japan, Korea and China, the Siderosticha genus is characterised by its broad, roughly-textured leaves which look a bit like bamboo and its suckering rhizomes (fairly slow-growing!).
Deciduous and dormant in winter, this broad-leaved sedge likes undergrowth or woodland beds and humus-rich, moist to damp soil. Hardiness: -15 °C
Carex siderosticha 'Shiro' is a superb cultivar with broad white leaves finely edged in green. Over the years it forms a very attractive ground cover in clumps 50 cm wide and 20 cm high.
We like to plant it with delicate, spring-flowering varieties (Ipheion 'Charlotte Bishop', Primula 'Pink Ice', Primula 'Blue Sapphire'), to contrast with other remarkable foliage varieties (Heuchera, Ophiopogon 'Black Dragon') or under ferns, Brunnera, Polygonatum and Rodgersia.
Grow in a woodland garden in humus-rich, well-drained and slightly damp soil. Resistant to temporary drought. Deciduous.
