A little background:
Carex trifida is native to the coastal cliffs of New Zealand. This sturdy plant grows to about 75 cm in height. Evergreen foliage of long, narrow straps, which are green to blue-green in a sunny position.
Carex trifida 'Rekohu Sunrise' was discovered accidentally by New Zealand nurseryman Lindsey Hatch (Joy Plants Nursery - New Zealand).
In October 1992 he discovered a mutation among her Carex trifida seedlings. Lindsey knew that variegated forms are not always stable, so he multiplied the plant by division over 11 generations. Rekohu ("misty sun") is the Maori name for the Chatham Islands.
Carex trifida 'Rekohu Sunrise' is a perfect plant with vigorous, finely variegated dark green and gold foliage which takes on a bluish veil in a sunny position. Long arching, evergreen leaves. Upright clumps of 60 cm in height.
In the garden we grow Rekohu in the sun or partial shade in ordinary, light soil that is well-drained in winter together with generous foliage plants (Hosta, Rodgersia, Gunnera) or in pots on a shady patio.
Hardiness: - 10°C.
