Flaming red cardinal
Panicum virgatum 'Cardinal' is a fairly recent (2010) Dutch selection and is close to Panicum 'Heavy Metal? with its intense grey-blue spring foliage and its tapered summer habit.
As the temperatures drop in autumn, its leaves take on a magnificent, flaming cardinal red. Red purple inflorescences.
Panicum 'Cardinal' is a stocky variety which grows wells in full sun (and doesn't droop) and is a good addition to a perennial bed with dominant colours of blue and red (late spring and summer) and red purple (late summer, autumn).
Companion plants for late spring + summer: Kniphofia, Agastache 'Sangria', Agastache 'Tangerine Dream', Agapanthus 'Navy Blue', Agapanthus ' Queen Mum'
Companion plants for late summer + autumn: Chrysanthemum 'Jules La Graveur', Chrysanthemum 'Appolo', Sedum 'Matrona', Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff'
Panicum do well set against the light.
Morning light, evening light. From late summer on, its inflorescences are set ablaze by a thousand glints of sunlight. Magnificent!
