Native to the cold, temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, Deschampsia cespitosa likes moist spots, light shade or not too hot sun.
We like this long-lived and easy to grow plant for its spring interest: nicely rounded, beautiful green tussocks and in summer its tall, shiny and diaphanous inflorescences.
And the show goes on through the winter ! The stalks turn brown with the frost and only need cutting back in February.
A Scottish cultivar, Deschampsia cespitosa 'Schottland' has dark green foliage and inflorescences in spikes, which are pale green at the beginning of the flowering season, golden in the height of summer and blond in the winter.
Height of the foliage: 35 cm. Height of the inflorescences: 60 to 100 cm.
Goes well with: Echinacea, Helenium, Rudbeckia, Anemone hupehensis, Heuchera, Helianthus, Anthemis ... and rosebushes !
