Japanese Painted Fern
The Athyrium genus has some 150 species native to the damp woodlands of temperate and tropical regions.
Deciduous and with short rhizomes, the Athyrium are tolerant in many situations provided they are kept constantly moist.
Athyrium niponicum is a species native to southeast Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, northeast China). It forms low clumps of triangular fronds (25-30 cm in length), which are deeply lobed and sometimes variegated green and silver in contrast with the purple median ribs. This painted lady fern is a popular garden plant with several cultivars available.
Athyrium 'Burgundy Lace' was developed by Terra Nova Nurseries and forms a delicious compact clump with triangular fronds, richly coloured in burgundy with silver streaks that turn grey-green in the summer. Height: 30 - 40 cm.
Because of its unique foliage, we like to plant it as a specimen combined with other Rolls-Royces of the partial shade, such as: Helleborus, Primula, Heuchera, Ophiopogon 'Black Dragon', Astelia 'Red Devil'. Pink-purple flowers enhanced by magnificent foliage?
And it's not bad planted in mass under shrubs in contrasting foliage combination with Heuchera!
For rock gardens, light understory, banks, shady borders and pots.
Grow in partial shade in good garden soil enriched every year with leaf compost. pH acid to neutral.
For pot growing, use a mixture of 1/5 good garden soil + 2/5 leaf compost + 1/5 rough sand + 1/5 crushed pine bark (or ericaceous compost).
