This soft shield fern is native to Europe. Polystichum setiferum is robust and evergreen and forms generous clumps that can reach 120 cm in height.
The Polystichum setiferum 'Dahlem' cultivar does not grow so tall (80 cm) and is interesting for its almost vertical fronds!
In the garden we like to plant it with Hostas for the contrasting foliage.
East to grow in partial shade in ordinary soil.
Good resistance to temporary drought.
Although evergreen, we like to remove the previous year's foliage to show off the new frond growth of Polystichum setiferum 'Dahlem' in the spring.
Vertical interest contrasts well with the rounded clumps of Hosta.
