An evergreen fern for a moist rockery or alpine greenhouse.
Blechnum penna-marina is native to the sub-alpine regions of the southern hemisphere, from Australia and New Zealand to Latin America and the sub-Antarctic islands. Also known as Antarctic hard-fern or alpine water fern it is easy to grow, hardy and long-lived.
It forms a low clump of dark green fronds 20cm in height. It is a rhizomatous plant and over the years can provide ground cover.
In the garden, we like to grow Blechnum penna-marina in an alpine rockery, in undergrowth near trees or in a trough.
