The Dryopteris genus has some 200 species of plants native to temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere. Most are deciduous and form attractive clumps over the years.
Dryopteris filix-mas or male fern is deciduous and grows into a clump about one metre in height. Dryopteris filix-mas is commonly found in Europe.
It has excellent ornamental qualities which can be put to good use in understory planting in groups of 3 to 5 plants per square metre.
You can also grow it in a pot on a shady patio. The effect is quite surprising!
Grow in shade or partial shade in all soil types, even compact, poor and dry. In a shady bed or under deciduous trees or conifers.
