Hart's tongue fern
Asplenium scolopendrium is native to the northern hemisphere and forms dense clumps of fronds from 30 - 60 cm in height. The fronds are uniformly thick and a lustrous dark green in colour. Evergreen in winter.
In the garden we grow this fern on banks, in undergrowth or in troughs or rockeries. Grows well in pots in the garden or as a house-plant. Its shiny evergreen foliage provides an ideal setting for the first, delicate flowers that appear in the spring: hellebore, galanthus, and primroses.
Grow in the shade or partial shade in humus-rich, moist, well-drained, acidic to chalky soil. A cultivar: Asplenium scolopendrium 'Cristatum' with deeply divided, wavy fronds.
Synonym: Phyllitis scolopendrium.
