White Wild Indigo

Baptisia leucantha is native to the dry meadows or forest edges of south-eastern North America, from Ontario to Texas. From June to mid-July, White Wild Indigo produces remarkable spikes of small white flowers (with a violet-blue base) similar to those of the pea family. The plant as a whole grows into an attractive shrub with grey-green stems and blue-green leaves nearly 120 cm in height.

We like to plant Baptisia leucantha in a meadow garden combined with Helianthus, Solidago, asters or grasses (Andropogon).

In a formal garden it is a good idea to prune the dried floral stems to prolong flowering and, in early autumn, as it has lost its ornamental value, cut the plant back to its swollen base.

Preferably grow in full sun in ordinary well-drained soil, with almost neutral acidity. It can cope with poor, stony soil.

Note: Like most herbaceous plants of the Fabaceae family, Baptisia leucantha has a deep and extensive root system. As it does not like to be moved, it is worthwhile choosing its location well to start with!

Synonyms: Baptisia lactea, Baptisia alba var. macrophylla
