Thymus vulgaris is native to the Mediterranean basin, symbol of a sun-drenched creek. It is a small sub-shrub with a dense, rounded habit and evergreen grey-green leaves.
Known since antiquity for its culinary and medicinal qualities, it is harvested and dried just before the end of flowering. At this stage, it has a maximum concentration of essential oils.
Thymus vulgaris 'Compactus' is a compact form which grows more densely than the species type.
For kitchen gardens, a bed of aromatic herbs, rockeries, gravel gardens or pots.

Grow in dry rockery in the sun in poor, rocky, light, filtering soil that is slightly acidic to alkaline.
