Light, refined flowers.
Anomatheca laxa is a bulbous perennial, member of the Iridaceae family and native to southern Africa. It was introduced into Europe as an ornamental in 1830.
Anomatheca laxa is easy to grow, free-flowering and prolific, but not particularly hardy. Its flowering is very refined: floral stems, which can grow to 30 cm, bear four to ten carmine-pink, funnel-shaped flowers that are a deep blood red at their base.
Depending on the growing conditions it will grow and spread from February until August. If you keep it inside a veranda this will force the flowers in early spring and in summer, with the increased heat, this geophyte plant will go into summer dormancy.
In temperate gardens, you can plant it out in a border or rockery in the sun (but not scorching) or in slight shade, in soil that has been loosened by adding equal parts: sand, peat and horticultural compost. In winter, a mulch of bracken or sawdust applied under an upturned flower pot for additional cover will provide the necessary protection. Hardiness: -8°C
At the nursery we like to grow Anomatheca laxa in pots to enjoy the delicate flowers and light scent to the full.
To respect the plant's dormancy and keep the bulbs healthy, reduce watering gradually in the summer and completely in winter. In February, when the bulbs come out of dormancy, remove them from the old growing medium and pot them up in a new mixture. Start watering again very gradually.
And soon the little bulbs of this blood-red lapeirousia (aka freesia) are ready to grow another year. From April onwards, they will provide several weeks of beautiful display in pots.
