Kirstenbosch Golden Sage, beach saliva, dune salvia.
From the botanical point of view the Cape Region of South Africa is quite particular for its large number of endemic plants (i.e. that are not found elsewhere).
William Curtis (Curtis’s Botanical Magazine - 1792) described Salvia aurea 'Kirstenbosch as a ' hardy greenhouse plant’ and that ‘such as are delighted with the singular rather than the beautiful appearances of plants, cannot fail of ranking the present species of sage among their favourites.’
It is a small shrub with a spreading habit, downy, silvery, aromatic leaves and nectar-producing, hood-shaped, orangey-brown flowers.
Salvia aurea 'Kirstenbosch' is semi-hardy, so we like to grow it in pots or a conservatory greenhouse or in the earth in mild climates, such as those near the seaside.
Grow in the sun in light, sandy soil.
Hardiness: - 6°C.
Maintenance: prune regularly to keep in shape.
You can use the leaves of this medicinal plant for a herbal tea cough remedy.
