Delosperma sphalmanthoides or tufted ice plant is native to the rocky uplands of the Komsberg Mountains (Cape Province, South Africa). It forms a mat of succulent bluish-green foliage 20 - 30 cm wide and a profusion of tiny fuchsia-pink flowers.
Despite appearances it is easy to grow and a great addition to a sunny rock garden or an alpine greenhouse as a display plant.
For walls, paving, scree, paving cracks, troughs or pots.
Grow in a warm spot in slightly moist (*), light, gravelly, well-drained soil.
Maintenance: apply a fine gravel mulch around the base of the leaves. Grow in a pot in a mix of three equal parts: 1/3 good garden soil, 1/3 potting compost, 1/3 rough sand (5 mm).
(*) Delosperma sphalmanthoides can suffer from drought during its growing period (autumn, winter, spring). Keep the growing medium moist, and to a lesser extent during its semi-dormancy in summer
