Soldanella alpina

Availability : Available

Description :

The alpine snowbell or blue moonwort is a member of the Primulaceae (Primrose) family and is found on the grassy and rocky alpine and subalpine slopes of Europe's mountains. Soldanella alpina is a small, spring-flowering perennial which forms a clump of tough, rounded leaves.

The flowers appear in early spring on upright stems which each bear two or three bell-shaped violet blooms with long fringes.

Grow in partial shade or sun in an alpine rockery, in a moist to damp, slightly acid, well-drained soil.

Protect it from too much winter damp with a gravel mulch or, preferably, grow in pots in an alpine greenhouse in a mix of equal parts drainage elements (5mm pozzolan), real ericaceous compost and good horticultural soil.

A difficult plant to find in nurseries, so Brittany Perennials is delighted to be able to offer it to you. This delicate plant needs to be looked after by careful, dedicated gardeners and collectors!
