Moss campion or cushion pink is a small mountain flower with a dense, moss-like habit.
Native to mountains in in the northern hemisphere (from the Alps to Siberia and North America), Silene acaulis slowly, but surely colonises rocky grasslands, scree and crevices. Silene acaulis produces single flowers in the spring.
It has a dense habit, bright green foliage and can adapt to the extreme conditions of cold, drought and wind encountered in grassy uplands.
In the garden we like to grow it in a rockery for its mossy effect and for its delicate spring flowers. Grows well in troughs or pots in a cold frame.
Grow in the sun (not scorching) in humus-rich, gravelly, moist to damp soil.
