Although most gentians have a cushion habit, Gentiana asclepiadea or willow gentian is a vigorous, clump-forming species with arching stems that produce bouquets of gentian-blue, narrow 4-5 cm long, trumpet-shaped flowers from under the leaves.
Native to the damp mountainous regions of Europe, Gentiana asclepiadea likes moist spots in deep, humus-rich soil and can, over the years, form remarkably spectacular clumps.
Patience is the prime quality of the gardener. You will need a little to see how Gentiana asclepiadea improves over the years!
In the garden we like to plant it in a partial shade rockery, sheltered from drying winds in permeable, moist, humus-rich, pH neutral or slightly acid soil.
